    heartburn symptoms

If you’re suffering from heartburn symptoms, acid reflux disease or even GERD, you’re in very good company. It’s estimated that between 21 and 40% of us suffer with some form of this painful digestive complaint.

The good news is that with a few simple lifestyle changes you can start to overcome your acid reflux symptoms. A lot of it is down to diet, so by following something known as a gerd diet for a while (how long will depend on how severe your condition is) and trying to avoid acid reflux foods, you’ll start to feel the benefits pretty much immediately.

With so many people having heartburn from time to time, it’s obvious that most cases can’t be caused by serious structural problems in the esophagus, diaphragm or stomach. Only a minority of sufferers have, for example, a hiatus hernia to explain their symptoms.

In the vast majority of cases the cause of acid reflux seems to be periods during which the gastro esophageal sphincter muscles relax, allowing upward flow of gastric juices into the lower third of the esophagus. More than half of all those who have heartburn so often and so severely that they are referred by their doctor to a gastroenterology centre have no abnormality on their endoscopy. Their mucosa looks normal. They are the people who are diagnosed as having endoscopy negative GERD.

Being given this diagnosis is in no way to belittle acid reflux disease or the effect they may be having on your life. The heartburn and other symptoms of GERD are certainly bad enough, even in people with endoscopy-negative results, to make life a misery. They are just as debilitating as, say, coronary heart disease. GERD is painful, can cause considerable mental stress and interfere badly with your social life.

The symptoms are all caused by the exposure of the esophagus to the acid and pepsin from the stomach, and some people’s esophageal linings may be more sensitive to them than others. So, being endoscopy-negative simply means that, happily for you, the reflux has not yet damaged the cells of your esophagus, and that you can prevent further damage and certainly ease the symptoms with some form of medication or a natural acid reflux remedy.

It doesn’t mean that you don’t need to have the full treatment to help relieve the pain. It also means that most people with GERD do not need tests and complex investigations: they are reserved for the minority who do not respond to initial treatment, or whose GERD is so severe that the doctor expects some complication and considers that you are at extra risk.
