The peristaltic movement of the muscles in the alimentary canal, allow the movement of the bolus only in one direction, that is, from the mouth towards the intestine, and finally the anus. The movement of the bolus from the esophagus to the stomach is controlled by a ring of muscle known as the ‘Lower Esophageal Sphincter Muscle’, which is present just at the juncture of the esophagus and the stomach. It usually allows the food to pass only one way from the mouth to the stomach. Its main function is to prevent the contents of the stomach to travel back into the food pipe, and thereby aid in the digestion process. However, sometimes, due to a spicy and fatty diet, or due to a poor lifestyle (late night dinner, just before going to bed; a very heavy and stuffing dinner; alcohol consumption, too many chocolates, obesity, very little water intake, etc), the lower esophageal sphincter muscle gets weakened and the stomach contents tend to leak back into the esophagus. When the contents of the stomach (and the digestive juices that are present in the stomach), leak back or get refluxed into the esophagus, then it is known as acid reflux or GERD, which results in a painful burning sensation in the esophageal area and even in the throat. This painfulness or burning sensation that arises in the chest, right at the back of the sternum, is known as ‘heartburn’.<br/><br/>With so many different types of acid reflux medicines available for treating heartburn and acid reflux symptoms, people often get confused while selecting the best acid reflux medicines, which can provide them with the most reliable and effective acid reflux cures. Moreover, prolonged use of these medicines, as in the case of chronic acid reflux patients is dangerous. For instance, prolonged use of antacids can lead to the formation of stones in the kidneys. During pregnancy, nearly 50% of the women experience heartburn.<br/><br/>However you can curb heartburn to an extent during pregnancy by following a smart diet- following are some tips to help you:-<br/><br/>• Rich and fried foods which are high in fat should be avoided. E.g. Fries or large helpings of ice-creams, sweets or desserts should be avoided.<br/><br/>• Avoid spicy food. Therefore limit your binging on Tortillas or Nachos and all those yummy but tangy foods (Think Mexican, think Thai).<br/><br/>• Grapefruit juice or orange juice can also create havoc with your system. So steer clear of them. Try milk or apple juice.<br/><br/>• Chocolates, soft drinks, coffee and caffeine laced food should be cut down upon.<br/><br/>• Try to have little snacks at small intervals rather than large heavy meals. Large meals tend to be heavier on the stomach and create built up of unwanted and unnecessary acids. Smaller meals when taken at regular intervals help in keeping the calorie intake high, which is needed for pregnancy. At the same time undue strain on the digestive system is avoided.<br/><br/>• Try and stay away from late night munching. You should let some hours pass after your dinner and then hit the bed. Lying down on a full stomach is not a good idea.<br/><br/>• Refrain from gobbling your food- even if it happens to be your most favorite food. Food should be eaten slowly and chewed properly.<br/><br/>• Don&#8217;t forget to drink ample water.<br/><br/>• Exercise! It aides digestion, which means lesser chances of indigestion or heartburn.<br/><br/>If possible don&#8217;t resort to any medications when you are experiencing heartburn. Instead of neutralizing the acid, these medications reduce the production of acid. They don&#8217;t act as quickly as antacids, but they provide longer relief. Take these medications before a meal that you think may cause heartburn because it takes them about 30 minutes to work. They&#8217;re also effective in reducing reflux at night if taken at bedtime. Some H-2-receptor blockers can cause infrequent side effects, including dizziness, diarrhea, headache, kidney problems and temporary breast enlargement in men. H2 blockers and PPIs both work by decreasing the production of stomach acid that causes many of the symptoms of gerd.<br/><br/>Decreasing the size of portions at mealtime may also help control symptoms. Eating meals at least 2 to 3 hours before bedtime may lessen reflux by allowing the acid in the stomach to decrease and the stomach to empty partially. In addition, being overweight often worsens symptoms. That awful sensation that wells up in your chest isn&#8217;t even remotely related to your heart; it actually starts in your gut. Heartburn or acid reflux as it&#8217;s otherwise known starts with a problem with the control of the acid in your stomach.<br/><br/>The pain you feel during a bout of heartburn is down to the acid from your stomach moving back up your throat towards your mouth. Now bearing in mind that the acid in your stomach is hydrochloric acid (strong enough to melt metal) your throat (your esophagus) is going to be severely irritated by this acid. It&#8217;s actually burning away at your flesh which is what causes that intense pain in and around your chest.<br/><br/>How often you actually get heartburn and how severe it is depends on a lot of factors such as stress and especially what types of foods you eat a lot. Spicy foods or foods that have a very high acid content are almost guaranteed to cause an attack of acid reflux; so if they&#8217;re part of your diet you may want to cut them out totally. For some people heartburn is a just a passing nuisance pain. For other folks out there it&#8217;s a constant battle against a painful problem they&#8217;d much rather get rid of.<br/><br/>When you get an attack of heartburn the way it appears varies from person to person. Some people feel a burning sensation in their throat, some people can&#8217;t stop burping and some others even begin to choke. Overall the most common sign of acid reflux is that nasty taste of vomit in the back of your mouth.<br/><br/>So what causes this problem?<br/><br/>Basically there&#8217;s a valve in your stomach designed to keep the acid down there. Sometimes this valve gets jammed open and the acid in your stomach escapes and flows up towards your throat. This happens a lot when people are laying down &#8211; maybe having a nap after a meal. Heartburn itself can be made far worse by your diet &#8211; eating spicy foods definitely won&#8217;t help.<br/><br/>Is it treatable?<br/><br/>Sure. There are dozens of treatments out there for heartburn/acid reflux and you&#8217;ll be spoiled for choice when choosing one. Actually there&#8217;s that many options out there just making the choice can be a headache. You have so many different over-the-counter treatments to choose from first. Dozens of them. Then you move into the territory of prescription treatments and all the &#8220;potential&#8221; side-effects that are tied to those. Some people even go as far as having surgery as a longterm solution for their reflux&#8230;.which is a bit drastic no?<br/><br/>If you&#8217;re like me you probably prefer to go the &#8220;natural route&#8221; for treating a problem like this. Especially considering the fact that most acid reflux &#8220;cures&#8221; can only be used for 2 weeks and then you have to stop. Not really a cure is it?<br/><br/><br/><br/></div>
