Does that cup of morning coffee cause you pain and suffering? Are you frustrated when an evening dinner out with friends ends in discomfort instead of relaxed conversation? Do you carry and take antacids every day?

Heartburn is a lot more than a mere nuisance. It can detract from enjoying a good meal and force you to change your routine. It dictates your every decision – what you can eat, what you can drink, when you need to lay down.

What is this vexing problem and how can you find relief?

WHAT CAUSES HEARTBURN?

Heartburn occurs when stomach acid makes its way back into the esophagus. A burning sensation and bitter taste are commonly experienced by heartburn sufferers.

If you are suffering more than a couple of times each week you may have the more serious problem of acid reflux disease – also known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Not all heartburn is caused by GERD. Occasional heartburn can be caused by many different factors. However, if you have regular episodes there are a number of things you can do to help.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

If you have regular heartburn, the first thing you should do is stop regularly using antacids. Antacids can alleviate the pain of occasional heartburn, but because they are designed to neutralize the acids in your stomach they can cause the stomach to create even MORE acid – a vicious cycle called ‘acid rebound’. Also, some antacids cause diarrhea or constipation.

Avoid heartburn-triggering foods such as caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, citrus, spicy or tomato-based foods as well as fatty or fried foods, onions or garlic.

Smoking or being overweight also increases the risk of GERD. Lifestyle changes may help to control the symptoms.

Activities such as lying down after a meal, bending forward, lifting heavy items or eating large meals can cause the onset of acid reflux. Avoiding these activities after a meal and eating smaller portions may help.

A few natural products such as extract of orange peel are being researched for their abilities to curb heartburn.

WHO IS AT RISK FOR GERD?

Anyone. But it should be noted that pregnant women, the overweight and smokers are all good candidates.

Additionally, young babies have immature digestive systems, so they may be prone to GERD. Precautions like frequent burping and keeping the infant upright for 30 minutes after eating can minimize the occurrence.

Older children may have to take precautions in diet and activity just as adults do. You should always consult your physician when you suspect GERD, just to avoid future complications.

If you suspect GERD, contact your doctor right away. There can be harmful side effects of persistent heartburn including scarring of the esophagus, erosion of the teeth and even an increased risk of esophageal cancer. Frequent, persistent heartburn can also be a symptom of other serious conditions and should be checked on by a physician. You can also seek holistic methods which have proven to be very effective in treating heartburn.

Further reading: Acid Reflux Symptoms.

Read more about what foods to avoid if you have acid reflux: Acid Reflux Food To Avoid.

More about acid reflux symptoms: What does acid reflux feel like?.

The real antidote to acid reflux, gerd, heartburn and indigestion has to do with what we eat, how we eat, where we eat and when we eat. This may sound a little too simple, but it is not. Everyone is different; therefore people have to approach eating in different ways.

There are many foods and beverages which trigger heartburn. Not all of these affect everyone in the same manner. For instance, I have difficulty digesting raw bell peppers, but I know others who cannot eat raw tomatoes, but have no trouble with raw bell peppers. Ironically, I can eat fresh raw tomatoes all day long and not have gerd. So anyone who makes blanket statements regarding this subject has got it all wrong.

Through trial and error, we all discover what we can and cannot digest with ease. There are, however, some foods that cause problems for anyone who is susceptible to acid reflux. Any food or drink that causes the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) to relax should be consumed in strict moderation. The LES is a ring of fibrous muscle which separates the esophagus and the stomach. When this muscle relaxes, acid and pepsin can splash up from the stomach into the esophagus and throat, thereby causing acid reflux.

The hydrochloric acid in the stomach is very powerful. It has been compared to the acid in a car battery, but it is a necessary part of our physical anatomy. It constitutes the initial stage of the digestive process. It not only breaks down the food we eat but keeps potentially dangerous bacteria which live in the digestive tract in check. This is the reason that drugs which stop the acid pumps from functioning are potentially dangerous. These drugs are called proton pump inhibitors (PPI drugs). They interfere with the digestion and assimilation of food and allow the overgrowth of bacteria.

Eating jagged foods like crackers or corn chips can cause little lacerations to develop in the esophagus and LES. Then later consuming acidic foods like spicy over cooked tomato sauce can exacerbate the problem. This scenario is typical of why many people have acid reflux to begin with. It can easily be avoided.

Foods and beverages, like chocolate, caffeine, fried foods, tomato products and alcohol, can cause the LES to relax and should be avoided until the esophagus has had time to heal.

How and where we eat is very important, as well. Chewing food properly is essential to correct digestion. Saliva in the mouth is actually very alkaline in nature. It acts as sort of a lubricant to assist the teeth in grinding food to a fine pulp, making it easier to digest. When I was a little boy, I had an elementary school teacher who constantly reminded me to chew my food twenty-two times before swallowing. She said that if I didn’t I would have indigestion. At the time, I thought she was crazy, but she was right on the money.

Eating slowly in a relaxed atmosphere is also crucial to good digestion. When we eat too fast we don’t chew properly forcing crude clumps of food into a shocked and traumatized stomach. This is certainly a perfect way to insure a good case of indigestion. People who grab meals on the run are the worst offenders and I think you will find many of them at fast food restaurants. Unfortunately, they are teaching their children to do the same.

Finally, there is the important consideration of when you eat. It’s a proven fact that eating several small meals, spaced throughout the day, is far healthier for the digestive system than the traditional “three big meals”. Eating too much at one time is one of the biggest causes of acid reflux and also contributes to unwanted weight gain.

Last but not least, I must mention the most relevant antidote to the acid reflux condition; never go to bed with a full stomach. If we want to avoid acid reflux, we must allow at least two hours after eating before lying down. Three hours would be even better. This, of course, means that a late night bowl of ice cream in bed would be strictly taboo.

So you see, the real antidote to the acid reflux blues is not so much about “what to do”, but about “what not to do”. It is not about drugs, surgery or even doctors. The natural cure for acid reflux is all about common sense.

© 2006 Wind Publishing

For free recipes, articles and information, visit: http://www.refluxgoneforever.com

First of all, acid reflux is not a disease. It is an acquired condition which can be completely healed by eating properly. I wonder if people had acid reflux, gerd and heartburn a thousand years ago. I sincerely doubt it. I believe it is a symptom of the quality of the food we eat today, our eating habits and the stressful times in which we live.

People who eat convenience food on the run can’t expect to enjoy proper digestion. Proper digestion requires chewing food well and not diluting the digestive juices with liquids, the worst of these being carbonated beverages. And of course all the fat associated with convenience food makes the situation worse. Most people who go to fast food chains eat a burger with fries and a large soda. The employees are trained to push the soft drinks on the customers. They look at you as if you are nuts if you opt to skip the big soft drink.

People today are always in a hurry, always late, both parents working and commuting to those jobs. There seems to be no time to shop for and prepare quality food. Children are forced to be self sufficient from an early age. They prepare their own meals, microwaving food which has little food value and is loaded with sodium and fat.

We are raising a generation of future acid refluxers. The parents are no better off, grabbing junk food to eat in the office. No wonder so many people suffer from acid reflux. I’m sure that the big pharma are thrilled at the prospects of future sales.

The medical community wants us to believe that only prescription drugs are the answer for the symptoms of indigestion. Of course this is not true. Antacids are, at best, a temporary fix and they are loaded with harmful ingredients such as sodium and aluminum. PPI drugs (proton pump inhibitors) like Nexium and Prilosec should only be used for eight weeks, at most. It says so right on the package, but after eight weeks what are we to do? Furthermore, these drugs only mask and hide the symptoms and have hundreds of harmful side effects. They don’t heal the condition! They only make the drug makers rich at our expense!

I used to suffer from acute GERD. I confess that I too ate on the run. I didn’t chew my food properly. I washed everything down with soda and became addicted to a PPI drug – that purple pill. It was so easy and convenient. I could abuse my body and not suffer for it. I thought that drug was my salvation until that illusion came crashing down on me.

After several years of taking this drug, my condition became worse and I was told to double the dose. I began to feel sluggish and tired. My vision suffered and my blood pressure soared. I realized that these were probably side effects of this PPI drug. Perhaps I was suffering from malnutrition? How does the body digest and assimilate food without stomach acid?

I did a computer search and found that there were hundreds of possible side effects. I was shocked at what I found! I was harming my body and I wanted to stop taking this drug! But when I tried to stop taking the PPI, the acid pumps, which had been shut off, went wild and produced more acid than ever before.

I can’t tell you how much I suffered. My esophagus was constantly burning and l feared that I would suffer permanent damage. I couldn’t sleep at night. I was afraid to eat or drink anything but water. My friends didn’t understand my problem. They would call and say, “Let’s go out for Southwestern barbeque”. Of course, I couldn’t. I loved to eat hot chili sprinkled with raw onions and jack cheese, but it was now my worst nightmare. My life was becoming unbearable!

I was determined to beat this illness. My doctor couldn’t help me – no one could tell me what to do. I had to heal myself. I became completely dedicated to finding the answers. I studied and researched. I wanted to discover naturopathic treatments as opposed to drugs. I searched high and low for natural remedies that might actually cure acid reflux. I tried every possible remedy and healthy diet I could find. I made myself a virtual guinea pig.

In the end, I found that the answers to the acid reflux problem are really quite simple. With a few changes in lifestyle and with the help of natural remedies, one can absolutely beat the acid reflux syndrome, without the use of drugs.

Remember, that the reason this condition exists in the first place, is due to a damaged esophagus. Let the esophagus heal by not eating the same foods in the same way that caused the damage. Loosing weight, exercising, chewing properly, drinking sufficient amounts of water and elevating the head at night, are all simple things that anyone can do to improve this condition.

There are also many natural ingredients found in any health store, which can help during, what I call, the acid reflux recovery period. Herbs, such as slippery elm and marshmallow have wonderful healing properties. Aloe vera juice, licorice and natural honey can sooth the esophagus and assist in the healing process.

I had to take control of my life and assume responsibility for my own actions. I managed to turn things around. I did heal myself of the acid reflux condition. With a little knowledge and discipline, anyone can do the same.

For more information on how to heal acid reflux the natural way, go to: http://www.refluxgoneforever.com

© 2006 Wind Publishing

Studies revealed that there are more than 25 million Americans that suffer heartburn symptoms every day, and more that 60 millions experience heartburn at least once a month. Nowadays there exist many heartburn medicines to choose from, and also, there appeared a natural product that relieves heartburn pain. That product is made from fresh orange peels, it is an orange peel extract, which has no side effects, and works efficient and safe.

The stomach is producing a fluid that contain an enzyme called pepsin, hydrochloric acid, and sometimes bile. Stomach fluid has a role in helping the digestion, and, the hydrochloric acid that is contained in the fluid helps with vitamin and nutrient absorption, and also prevents bacteria from growing in the stomach and intestines. The stomach has a special lining, that is protecting it from the acid, and from other fluids.

The lower esophageal sphincter, which is a circular band of muscle is using pressure to open and close, and in this way is allowing the food that travels from the mouth down through the esophagus to enter the stomach. After the food reaches the stomach, the lower esophageal sphincter narrows and closes, to prevent it from going back up the esophagus.

Sometimes, the lower esophageal sphincter opens at wrong time and that is causing the stomach fluid to enter the esophagus. Because the esophagus does not have a special lining to protect it from the hydrochloric acid, a burning pain will result.

It is known that heartburn and ulcers are in the same family of acid-related maladies, but usually, ulcers are caused by bacterial infection of the stomach, chronic use of aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Both diseases can be aggravated by some factors, both show symptoms, and they can cause serious problems if you don’t treat them.

We can say a person has gastroesophageal reflux disease if persistent heartburn is present two or more days a week. This can become a grave problem in time, because the stomach liquid can destroy the delicate esophagus lining. Gastroesophageal reflux disease can provoke the apparition of other diseases too, like pneumonia, asthma, chronic cough, hoarseness, or increased risks for esophageal cancer and Barrett’s esophagus condition.

There are a lot of factors that can provoke the appearance of heartburn. Large meals are not good, because may force the stomach liquid to come into the esophagus, lying down after eating is also not recommended. Foods like chocolate, tomatoes, garlic, black pepper, vinegar, citrus fruits or spicy foods can make the lower esophageal sphincter to relax and open, and in that way, stomach liquid will enter the esophagus.

Heartburn often appears to overweight persons, because abdominal fat leads to a higher pressure in the abdomen. Higher pressure in the abdomen also can appear to pregnant women, and there are more than 25% of the pregnant women who experience heartburn sometime during pregnancy.

It is known that people with hiatal hernias have often problems with heartburn. This hernia allows foods and stomach fluid to travel back into the esophagus.

Usually, medications that are used to treat heartburn have serious side-effects. Antacids can make the stomach to become more vulnerable to food poisoning, for example, a potentially fatal bacteria found in raw shellfish that is normally neutralized by stomach juices can live up to 2 hours in presence of antacids. That has as a result the apparition of diarrhea, stomach cramps and severe vomiting.

Antacids can also interact with other medications, or prevent their absorption. Some of the medications affected by antacids are benzodiazepines, chloroquine, allopurinol, aspirin, corticosteroids, phenytoin type drugs, diabetic medicines, ticlopidine, tetracycline, thyroid and ulcer medications.

Proton pump inhibitors have as an effect that they reduce stomach’s ability to produce acid almost completely.

H2-receptor blockers act in decreasing hydrochloric acid production, and as a negative aspect is the fact that B12 and calcium absorption from food can no longer take place.

There are other medications too, like Nexium, Prevacid, and Prilosec, which are safe it they are being used short periods, but the long-term consequences are not known.

In stead, the orange peel extract is a safe and has results. There are a few theories about how this extract acts. It is believed that it helps the food to stay in the esophagus just as long it is needed, the food is moving to the stomach efficiently. Orange peel extract may also decrease the potential for the fluid to come into the esophagus, working as a surfactant substance. It is recommended the dose of 1,000 mg of orange peel extract/day, for 20 days, because that was the amount used in the studies.

Among the patients who took part to the study, almost one-third experienced resolution of heartburn symptoms as early as the second day of the study and 90% of participants reported resolution of heartburn symptoms two weeks. Even 2 weeks after they stopped this treatment, they haven’t experienced heartburn. The conclusion is that after

20 days of taking orange peel extract, most of the patients experienced no heartburn, and some people experienced mild heartburn after they started consuming foods that they avoided before.

The orange peel extract is a natural product, but you should follow the dosages on the label, and it is known that some people must avoid this extract. You shouldn’t take orange peel extract if you are pregnant, if you have or you are suspect of ulcer, and also children shouldn’t be given this extract because not all age- groups clinical tests have been finished.

It was discovered that the orange peel extract has a pronounced cancer preventative activity. No toxicities were found in any of the patients that used this extract, analysis of the blood levels revealed that it was well absorbed, and it is also known that this extract inhibits the way cancer cells divide and grow.

Persistent heartburn can lead to complications, that is why it is important to go to the doctor if you have symptoms like painful swallowing, severe hoarseness or wheezing, vomiting for more than three days. There can come also other symptoms, which are associated to other grave diseases, that’s why you must contact the doctor at once. Some of that symptoms are: extreme stomach discomfort, vomiting of bloody or black material, black or bloody bowel movements.

Heartburn is a serious problem that affects many people, but there are treatments, and now, a safe and effective option of treatment appeared – orange peel extract .

For more resources about acid reflux or especially about acid reflux surgery please click this link http://www.acid-reflux-info-guide.com/acid-reflux-surgery.htm

Acid reflux is a condition where gastric juices containing acid travel back from the stomach into the esophagus (gullet or swallowing tube). Acid reflux is also the cause of heartburn and in severe cases, this can be very troublesome, it can last several months or longer if not treated. Acid reflux is mainly caused due to regurgitation or refluxing of partly digested food back to esophagus. Acid reflux is a chronic condition which if not treated properly in early stages it can lead to several other severe complications. Acid Reflux treatment includes medications along with certain dietary and lifestyle changes.

Acid reflux occurs when liquids and food from the stomach regurgitate or reflux into the esophagus and sometimes out the mouth. Acid reflux also referred by Gastric reflux disease, GORD (Gastro-esophageal reflux disease) or GERD (Gastro esophageal reflux disease) is a very painful disease as it may last from few to several years.

Acid reflux may also cause too much injury by developing ulcers near the stomach and oesophagus, also pronounced as esophagus, narrowing of oesophagus or oesophageal reflux, a rare type of cancer. Acid reflux is very difficult to be detected in children or infants. Acid reflux is a disorder where the acidic juices of the stomach flow back (reflux) into the esophagus. Acid reflux can be diagnosed and treated so that the symptoms are relived. Acid reflux is a particularly unpleasant problem, but it doesn’t have to be a debilitating one.

Acid Reflux Treatment there are many different treatment options available for acid reflux and heartburn. Heartburn, the burning sensation in the middle of the chest that is usually triggered after eating, is actually the most common symptom of a more complex disorder called GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) or acid reflux a condition where the stomach refluxes or backs up its liquid content to the esophagus.

Heartburn symptoms caused by GERD are usually relieved by drugs called proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec, Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix, and Nexium). Treatment for GERD depends on how severe symptoms are, where the treatment may just include lifestyle changes, such as changing what one eats or drinks. Gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly referred to as GERD or acid reflux, is a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach regurgitates (backs up or refluxes) into the esophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a more serious form of gastroesophageal reflux (GER), which is common. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic disease that causes recurrent acid reflux.

PROTONIX® (pantoprazole sodium) Delayed-Release Tablets are indicated for the short-term treatment of duodenal ulcer, erosive esophagitis, gastric ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease, helicobacter pylori infection, peptic ulcer, zollinger ellison syndrome, stress ulcer prophylaxis. Protonix is commonly called in Canada as Pantoloc and it is generically in the medical world as Pantoprazole. Protonix is the used for the reduction of the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Protonix is a medicine indicated for the treatment of esophageal damage caused by GERD or Gastroesophageal reflux disease. Protonix inhibits or blocks (H+,K+)-ATPase by forming a bond to two sites of the enzyme system, and as a result, suppresses the final step in gastric acid production. Protonix Delayed- Release Tablets should be swallowed whole, with or without food in the stomach. Protonix is used to treat damage to the esophagus associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid production (e. Protonix may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. Protonix can be taken with or without food. Protonix can also be used for other purposes aside from the ones stated in this medical guide.

I am Dianadj, and I am working with realpharmacyrx for more info related to sexual health please log on to realpharmacyrx.com

Acid reflux is a disease characterized by the abnormal reflux or rise of gastric contents from the stomach into the esophagus resulting in chronic symptoms and mucosal damage. So it occurs when one of the two closures or “sphincters” in the esophagus fail to remain sealed after food or liquid intake and the contents get spilled into your larynx and pharynx instead of in your stomach.

Causes of acid reflux

Acid reflux is often caused by temporary or permanent alterations in the lining that actually separates the esophagus from the stomach. It is the ineffectiveness of the lower esophageal sphincter [LES] or the temporary LES relaxation connected to hiatus hernia that causes severe acid reflux. In adults, the most common symptom of acid reflux is acute heartburning sensation caused by acid resting in the esophagus. The painful sensation continues behind the sternum or breastbone. Another common symptom of acid reflux is esophagitis, which means that the person suffers an inflammation of the lining of esophagus. This simultaneously causes swallowing difficulties and chronic chest pains.

The cause of acid reflux in infants and children is their undeveloped digestive system. So the best way to avoid acid reflux in children is taking them to the doctor for immediate and fast medication.

Symptoms of acid reflux

Sometimes acid reflux is also characterized by rapid coughing, persistent pains in the ears, sinusitis, hoarseness or even complete change in the voice. When you are suffering from acid reflux, you should immediately visit the doctor for medication. Do not neglect as severe acid-reflux may lead to formation of a stricture or ulcers in your esophagus. Often persons suffering from acid reflux diseases can experience tasting something sour or salty behind the throat. However, other less common symptoms of acid reflux includes chest pain, swallowing, halitosis or bad breath, repeated throat clearing and water brash [hyper-secretion of saliva].

Instant remedies of acid reflux

To provide immediate relief to adults in case of acid reflux, you can try out with some homemade remedies. Instead of taking tea, you can have tea mixed with aniseed, peppermint, honey and lavender. However, you should have 8 oz in the morning and 8 oz in the evening for immediate relief.

Following is a brief account of other immediate home remedies

1) Have digestive enzymes containing Betain, pepsin or HCl components with each meal.

2) Papaya digestive enzymes, which contain papain, are also excellent dosage used for protein digestion.

3) Have pineapple as it supports digestion, reduces acidity effectively and supports wound healing.

4) Sprinkle cinnamon on your bread and have it to reduce acidity.

5) Eat organic grapefruits that are dried to remedy excess acid reflux.

6) Have romaine lettuce that will help to eliminate acid reflux or severe heartburn conditions.

7) A daily mixture of nutmeg, mace and slippery elm reduces indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, stomach gas, and vomiting and severe heartburn.

Treat acid reflux effectively to reduce any further complications in your stomach.

When the brilliant colors of autumn are gone and the weather starts to turn a bit nippy, we look ahead to the holiday season with wonderful images of the past dancing in our heads. It’s a magical time when we are reunited with friends and family; a time when children are the happiest and all of us are at our very best. Needless to say delicious food will be the cornerstone of all this festivity.

Whether it’s Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years, it’s truly a challenge to prepare food that is acid reflux friendly. During the holiday season, we are tempted to indulge in all those fatty, sweet and acidic foods that we enjoyed so much in childhood. We like to think of this as comfort food, however, acid indigestion is anything but comfort to those who suffer from it.

Complete abstinence from acidic, fatty and sweet food would defeat the purpose of celebrating the holidays. Dishes that do not bring back memories of childhood would do the same. Thankfully, there are simple ways to make seasonal dishes healthier without ruining all the fun.

If you can’t resist that holiday drink or chocolate dessert then it would be wise to let moderation be your guide. Also, keep in mind that eating too much of even the most alkaline food can cause indigestion, as well.

I have created what I consider to be the perfect holiday menu. The dishes below retain the important flavors of the season, yet are healthy enough for most acid reflux sufferers to enjoy in comfort. The entire family will love this dinner. It’s also quick and uncomplicated to prepare. This menu will feed six easily with leftover beef.

Bon appetite!

SOUP COURSE

Country Style Creamed Pumpkin Soup

1 pat of unsalted butter

¼ cup natural chicken stock (Kitchen Basics, if possible)

1 Cup finely minced yellow onion

15 oz can pure pumpkin

Chicken stock (fill empty pumpkin can)

½ cup maple syrup

¼ tsp. cinnamon

Freshly grated nutmeg

¼ cup half & half

Crumbled nitrate free bacon, chopped chives and ¼ sour cream in squeeze bottle (optional)

In a 2 qt. soup pot heat butter and stock to the simmer.

Add minced onion and cook covered stirring occasionally until tender and translucent.

Blend in pumpkin and can of stock. Cook at the simmer for 10 minutes.

Blend in maple syrup and spices. Reheat in a double boiler.

Serve in a soup terrine and offer garnish on the side. Garnish with bacon for the non-gerd guests and chives for others. After plating the soup, make decorative zigzag patterns with sour cream from the squeeze bottle.

MAIN COURSE

Roasted Beef Tenderloin with Caramelized Root Vegetables

1 (4 to 5 pound) trimmed & tied tenderloin roast

Olive oil

Head of garlic, peeled and sliced

Salt and pepper

Fresh rosemary chopped

3 parsnips & 3 turnips peeled and cut into 1” pieces

½ pound peeled baby carrots

15 small pearl onions, peeled (make an X with knife at the root end)

1 pound new potatoes cut in half

Olive oil

Salt and pepper

Fresh chopped thyme

Parsley for garnish

Heat oven to 425 degrees F.

Place roast in roasting pan.

Massage thin coat of olive oil into roast.

Rub sliced garlic over roast and discard.

Season with salt & pepper to taste.

Insert meat thermometer into thickest area of roast.

Place vegetables in bowl & coat well with olive.

Season with salt & pepper to taste and mix well. Garnish with parsley.

Serve with horseradish sauce to those who are non-gerd and au jus from the cutting board, for those more sensitive.

Note: If using a convection roasting oven, adjust the cooking time accordingly.

SALAD/CHEESE COURSE

Belgium Endive, Toasted Walnuts & Blue Cheese with Walnut Vinaigrette

6 heads Belgium endive leaves washed & dried

1 cup toasted walnuts (toast lightly in heavy pan and shake skins off)

½ pound crumbled good blue cheese (Gorgonzola, Stilton or Roquefort)

4 tbsps. Whisk to blend.

Paint finished tart with apricot mixture with pastry brush while still warm.

Serve with ice cream or crème fraiche. Garnish with a sprig of mint or fresh raspberries.

Note: This wonderfully festive dessert can be prepared hours before dinner is served.

While insomnia prevails among a notable proportion of adults, children too suffer from sleep disorders. Insomnia in children is characterized by signs of wakefulness or restlessness daily at night, irritability or heaviness on waking from sleep, mood swings, lack of concentration, and unusual difficulty with remembering.

Causes of Insomnia in Children

In children, the causes of insomnia are generally more easy to work out that in grown ups. If your child suffers from any of the symptoms listed above, look for any one or more of these causes that usually cause sleep disorders in children: stress, diet, anxiety, fear, physical problems (constipation, pain etc.), and disturbed routine (watching TV late in the night, over use of computer, video games etc.)

Insomnia in Women

A good number of women suffer from sleep disorders in early pregnancy. Insomnia In Early Pregnancy Is Mostly Caused By Discomfort And Anxiety. Most people attribute the sleep disorders in early pregnancy to the hormonal imbalances – while in some cases this would be true, there are plenty instances where the insomnia in early pregnancy is caused by the excitement and anxiety of being pregnant. . To counteract the problem, you will have to consult a doctor since self medication would be contraindicated once you are confirmed to be pregnant.

Sleep disorders during Pregnancy

Studies have found that about 78 % of pregnant women suffer from insomnia for varying durations. However, physicians believe that sleep disorders during pregnancy is normal and not dangerous to the infant’s health. A number of reasons account for sleeping difficulties encountered during pregnancy. In many cases, the growing size of the abdomen is the main cause of sleeplessness. Pressure eon the bladder caused by increased size of the abdomen makes it necessary to urinate several times during the night. The pregnant woman feels trouble with finding a comfortable position for sleeping. Feeling the baby’s movement can also cause waking up at night. Heartburn and back pain are two main physical problems that cause insomnia during pregnancy. There might be aching in the hips, causing discomfort. Hormonal changes and psychological conditions like anxiety and/or depression are other main causes of sleeplessness.

Coping With sleep disorders during Pregnancy

The first thing to do is to prevent you from getting overly anxious, just looking at the time and worrying about sleep. Taking a warm bath, before going to bed, brings comfort and relaxes you to sleep. Relaxation exercises like yoga and meditation etc. are helpful in relieving anxiety and bringing sleep. You can also ask your partner for a massage. Take plenty of exercise during the day or in the evening but not too close to bedtime. Exercise will make you tired and hence drive you to sleep. Also try to avoid taking naps in the day. If you get up several times to urinate during the course of the night, take fewer fluids after 4 pm. Also avoid taking caffeine drinks in the evening. Their stimulating effect is a sleep antagonist. Keep the temperature of the bedroom at a comfortable level. Keep the window open for fresh air to reach you. Use additional blankets to keep you warm if the room feels cold.

Menopause and Insomnia in Women

Women going through their menopause frequently suffer from insomnia. Menopause and sleep disorders co-occur due to the reduction and imbalance of hormones associated with menopause. The resulting stress, anxiety, and depression deprive the menopausal woman of sleep. Accompanying these sleep disturbances are hot flashes and sweats that are the characteristic symptoms of menopause.

Treatment for Menopausal Insomnia

Insomnia is treated in a variety of ways like prescribed medications, herbal formulas, relaxation techniques, exercises, psychological treatment (if anxiety or depression are the main cause), lifestyle changes, home remedies and nutrition etc. For menopause and sleep disorders co-occurring, hormone replacement therapy is also used. However, it is not effective in all women and different women going through menopause respond differently to this therapy. When the body’s hormonal imbalance settles down by itself, the insomnia associated with it also disappears.

Various Prescribed Medicines for Insomnia

Trazodone is an antidepressant available in the drug market under the brand name Desyrel or Desyrel Dividose. Besides treating depression, loss of motivation for daily activities, and other symptoms, Trazodone is frequently prescribed for treating symptoms of insomnia.

Over the years, lexapro and sleep disorders have been connected together because of the fact that most people who have taken this drug ends up suffering from insomnia. According to experts, lexapro is one of the most effective drugs for treating depression especially in children and adolescents. Unfortunately, lexapro and insomnia seem to have become so closely associated that when you think of lexapro and insomnia, you immediately associate it with cause and effect where lexapro becomes the cause of insomnia.

Melatonin is a hormone that the body produces naturally. It is also a powerful antioxidant. Melatonin is reported to help to have a sedative effect on the body, helping to induce sleep in many. It is non-toxic and no side effects have been officially reported while using this therapy. Using melatonin for sleep disorders is a fairly well-known practice in society.

Prozac is certain type of medicine that is commonly used to treat depression in people. As an anti-depressant, prozac is rather effective and is said to be very good in helping people with anxiety disorders and eating disorders. However, the bad news about prozac is that it can have some serious side effects including insomnia.

Many people know they have heartburn but a common question in doctors offices today is just what is acid reflux disease? Acid reflux disease or GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) has become common in recent years. It is also termed GORD when spelled oesophageal. GERD occurs when gastric fluids flow back into and cause damage to the esophagus as well as the mucous membranes within.

In adults, heartburn is a major symptom of GERD. This is usually felt as a burning sensation behind the breastbone. Other conditions associated with GERD include esophagitis (an inflammation of the esophagus), difficulty swallowing and chronic chest pain. This chest pain can sometimes be misconstrued as heart disease and should not be ignored under any circumstances.

While occasional heartburn is commonplace, it does not necessarily indicate GERD. If you even think that GERD is possible, see your doctor immediately.

Typical symptoms include hoarseness, voice changes, earaches, burning in the chest and nausea. GERD has also been linked to cases of esophageal cancer in older patients.

In addition, the presence of a hiatal hernia raises the risk of developing GERD.

In children, GERD may be very difficult to diagnose. Frequent spitting up, vomiting, coughing and respiratory trouble are good indicators of pediatric GERD. While there are other symptoms, a patient may have one or many of these symptoms. It is estimated that about 35% of all babies are born with reflux disease. Of these children born with reflux disease, most will outgrow it by their first birthday.

The first step in diagnosing acid reflux disease or GERD is taking a full history of the patient’s symptoms. Tests may be done including a barium swallow, EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) or a 24-hour monitoring of the Ph levels in the esophagus. The EGD is a form of endoscopy and is only performed on patients with advanced or alarm symptoms.

GERD or acid reflux disease is caused by a failure of one or more of the components of the esophageal tube including the anti-reflux barrier (ARB), gastroesophageal valve (GEV) and lower esophageal sphincter (LES). In recent years, more focus has been placed on the GEV as it has been identified as the central point for controlling GERD. The GEV alone is capable of stopping reflux as has been shown in tests on cadavers.

Treatments can be non-invasive, pharmaceutical or even surgical in extreme cases. Many times the physician will suggest a lifestyle change.

Some foods have been linked to the development of GERD.

There are also a few self-treatments including not eating before bed and sleeping on the left side. These have been proven to lessen the effects of GERD in patients with post-bedtime symptoms.

Keeping all of this in mind, GERD is actually not an acid problem but a muscular weakness disease so the net time you are wondering what is acid reflux disease caused from, you can stop blaming the wrong thing. The weakening of the esophageal muscles causes the acid to back up into the esophagus. So if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please see a physician as soon as possible. It could save your life.
